Women’s Leadership Luncheon

The Community Chest hosted its second annual Women’s Leadership Luncheon celebrating the lives of three extraordinary women from our local communities: Elizabeth Cutter Morrow (1873-1955), Elisabeth Morrow Moran (1904-1934), and Elizabeth Cady Stanton (181501902). Each of these women made invaluable contributions to the community. The luncheon was held at the Elisabeth Morrow School, in Englewood.

This year’s program featured three honored guests:

Molly Craig Berry

Molly Craig Berry

Molly Craig Berry came to the US from Guyana as a teenager.  Her family settled in Brooklyn where she attended local schools.  Although she was an excellent student, her school experiences were not positive and she had to seek resources on her own to satisfy her own educational needs.  After attending Middlebury College on a full scholarship she realized how important these resources were for her and she committed to spending her time on assisting children with getting these resources.  She has done this in her role as a member of the Board of Education in Englewood.   Molly has worked for the Guyanese Consulate and has worked in her own business as well.

Tami Luchow

Tami Luchow

Tami Luchow grew up in Tenafly and attended Yale and Columbia Universities.  She is a changemaker and an inspirational speaker.   She is particularly committed to educating the public about changes that are needed in the health care system, for what she calls visible and invisible challenges.  Tami is the founder of a nonprofit organization called Care for Life and Limb.

Dr. Arthorine Walker

Dr. Arthorine Walker

Dr. Walker came to the US from Jamaica as a child.  She held many jobs, beginning as a housekeeper and working her way up to the position she now holds as a special education teacher at Dwight Morrow High School.  She holds two Masters degrees and a doctorate.   She is a fierce advocate for those in need and is always ready to help those who need food, clothing or other necessities.   Dr. Walker has four children, all of whom followed in their mother’s footsteps by becoming educators.

The Community Chest awarded two scholarships to two young women that demonstrate extraordinary leadership qualities.

Alexa Sarah Miller

Alexa has spent her years in high school carefully and deliberately cultivating her leadership skills. An ardent observer of gender discrimination, she has dedicated her time and energy to assuming leadership roles in various organizations in school and in the community. She is the president of the Women’s Empowerment Club at her school, an active member of the Democratic Club and the Captain of her track team. She also will be attending The George Washington University in DC, where she hopes to pursue a major in Human Services and Social Policy.

Billie Dove Singer

Billie is a senior at Tenafly High School. Inspired by a successful lobbying experience in Washington, DC, where she convinced a local representative to sponsor a specific bill on gun control, she believes strongly in the power of political activism. Her long term goal is to follow in the footsteps of Nicky Haley, the former Ambassador to the United Nations. Billie will be attending The George Washington University in the Fall of 2019 where she will study political science and government.

It was an inspirational afternoon celebrating women in our community.

A very special evening…
